ŚMIG D-3

HOW DO I CONNECT PLASTERBOARDS?

Our product will help you connect plasterboards! Also ŚMIG D-3 has much more functions, like for example fixing holes. For more info check below.

SMIG D-3 jointing plasterboards

PRODUCT PROPERTIES

PERFECTLY WHITE

Wet and dry ŚMIG D-3 layers are white.

Flexible and resistant to cracking

Polymer additives in ŚMIG D-3 ensure increased strength of intercrystalline links in gypsum. Thus, after drying and bonding, the product is stronger, more flexible and more resistant to cracking than typical gypsum. NOTE! The product reaches its structural stability, flexibility and adhesion only after drying and bonding have been completed.

Jointing strength

D-3 is designed for joining plasterboards. Its properties guarantee that the joint is strong without the need to use reinforcement tape. However, the joint can be several times stronger with reinforcement tape if placed in the first D-3 layer.

Bonding time
The bonding time, or the time needed for bonding after the product is mixed with water, is about 45 minutes (at +20°C and water/product ratio of 1:2). The bonding time may increase or decrease depending on the temperature. A temperature below +5°C stops bonding.
Open time

The average open time (time when serviceable layer of product can be placed and corrected) is 15 minutes. It depends on the substrate absorbency and the thickness of the product layer. The time is reduced to 2-3 minutes when the layer is thin and the substrate highly absorbent. Poor absorption substrates and thicker layers prolong open time until the beginning of bonding.

Drying time

A layer of 1 mm takes 2-3 hours to dry at +20°C. The time varies depending on the thickness of the layer, temperature and ambient conditions. Low temperature and thicker layers may prolong drying up to several days. In case the interior lacks ventilation and humidity level remains high, the product layer may not dry at all.

Layer thickness from 1 to 7 mm

The maximum thickness of D-3 is 7 mm. Polymer additives guarantee that even the thinnest layers are well bound without the risk of losing their integrity.

ŚMIG D-3 - No Tape Joint Filler

ŚMIG D-3 is designed for joining plasterboards. High flexibility and strength of gypsum ensures durable joints without the need to use reinforcement tape. ŚMIG D-3 is also used for filling and patching in walls and ceilings.

HOW TO USE

1. Surface preparation

Only plasterboards with prefabricated or manually processed edges are suitable for jointing with the product. Plasterboards with prefabricated edges must be jointed with a gap of 3–5 mm. When cut, edges of plasterboards should be profiled at 45°, treated with K-15 primer and fitted while maintaining a gap of 1-2 mm. Before joining, make sure that edges are prepared as required. Plasterboards should be clean, dry and securely attached. The product can be applied to all typical building substrates for filling and patching, including gypsum plaster, cement, lime, gypsum blocks, concrete, aerated concrete, plasterboards and durable coatings of emulsion, phthalic and oil paints, provided the substrate is stable, clean and dry. The surface should be stable, clean, free of grease, soot, flaking and unstable paint coatings (cleaning with water under pressure or detergents). Wetting of the substrate is not recommended as it reduces the adhesion of the product. No priming is necessary. If the substrate stability is uncertain, it is recommended to use the ŚMIG K-15 Universal Primer.

2. Product preparation

The product should be mixed with water (0.3 l of water per 1 kg of product) and mixed with a slow mixer and agitator suitable for gypsum finish. During preparation, use clean, preferably potable water. Put product into water, never the other way round. Mix until you reach uniform mass of desired density. After 2-3 minutes, the mixture is ready for use. Too thin or too dense mortar may be corrected during the initial 10 minutes by adding the dry product or water and mixing. To prepare mortar, use stainless containers free from any remains of solidified gypsum. Apply manually using clean stainless steel tools. Working temperature ranges between +10 and +40°C.

3. Jointing

Fill the space between the edges with D-3 using a spatula at an angle to allow the product to be accurately pressed into the gap. Allow to dry. When the product is used on plasterboards with manually cut edges and joints exposed to high stress, it is advisable to apply reinforcement tape. Tape should also be used to reinforce joints between plasterboards and other surfaces. Wait at least 24 h after jointing, before applying another D-3 layer. After drying, provide sanding with polycarbonate mesh or 80-150 grit sand paper and remove dust. It is recommended to finish the surface using ŚMIG D-1 or A-2 finish. Remove dust before painting. D-3 does not require priming. However, to improve the quality of paint coating, it is recommended to improve surface absorption of plasterboards and joints by applying K-15 multipurpose primer.

4. Strengthening of mineral plaster

ŚMIG D-3 is also suitable for strengthening mineral plaster. For this purpose, apply a 2-3 mm layer of the product with reinforcement tape. Tape should be applied with a minimum overlap of 5 cm. The reinforcement layer is suitable for smoothing sanding as standard plaster.

5. Filling, patching and chasing in mineral plasters

Repair the surface by pressing the product into the cavity. After drying, apply the second layer. For perfect smoothness, sand the surface with polycarbonate mesh or 80-150 grit sandpaper. Before applying another layer of plaster, as well as before painting, remove dust or prime the surface with ŚMIG K-15.

Restrictions

ŚMIG D-3 is suitable for indoor use only. The product should not be applied on metal, plastic, glass, timber and very smooth prefabricated concrete surfaces. Do not use it in rooms where humidity permanently exceeds 70%. Periodically high humidity, such as in laundry rooms, kitchens or bathrooms is not a problem. Adequate ventilation must be provided when drying.

Packaging

The product is available in three-layer paper ventilated bags of 10 kg. Store in dry rooms with interior temperature from 0 to +40°C. Pallets can be stacked on top of each other to form maximum three layers.

Guarantee
The product is suitable for use up to 12 months after the manufacturing date printed on the packaging. During the period, the manufacturer guarantees that the product maintains its properties, provided storage conditions are complied with and the product is applied according to its intended use, guidelines, and common construction rules and OHS standards. The product has its Properties Declaration and it is certified by the Hygiene Authority.
